Proper storage conditions of pharmaceutics are of key importance to wholesalers in the supply chain of medicinal products between producer and retail. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) uncovers an untapped potential within indoor temperature mapping validation of pharmaceutical warehouse facilities, as these are subject to strict governmental requirements, usually fulfilled by means of time-consuming and expensive on-site measurements.

Pharmaceutical warehouse requirements
During construction of such a pharmaceutical warehouse facility in Denmark, Aerotak assisted in the process by mapping temperatures throughout the warehouse using Simcenter CFD solutions.
A CFD model was set up in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and validated against temperature measurements carried out in the warehouse facility in empty conditions. The CFD model was able to capture air flow and temperature distribution in the highly stratified indoor environment to within 8% of measured values. The validated model was used to predict the temperature distribution throughout the warehouse in filled conditions, identifying local cold and hot spots that would be critical to the shelf life of the pharmaceuticals.
The value of CFD indoor environment modelling
Comparing predictions for empty and filled warehouse conditions, reduced air circulation is apparent for the filled warehouse, leading to lower temperatures near the floor of the warehouse. Based on the numerical findings and reporting for the filled warehouse condition, the proposed ventilation system was found to comply with the legislative criteria and was subsequently approved by the authorities at significant time and cost reductions for the client compared to a conventional experimental approach.
