Compute Express Link®, or CXL®, has become the focus of intense interest over recent years. This technology promises to permit servers to grow their memory size far beyond the amount supported by DDR, and allows system architects to implement very high bandwidth memory solutions. It provides a coherent framework for computers to pass large messages to each other through memory, and supports all varieties of memory, presenting it to the server in a way that disguises any differences of interface or memory type. CXL may even reduce the system administrator’s memory spend for memory that is rarely touched by the software, by allowing disaggregation to finally be applied to memory resources the way that it is now applied to processors and storage. But is CXL really all that it portends to be? Does it really provide economic and performance benefits to computing systems? In this SNIA Persistent Memory Special Interest Group webinar, join Jim Handy of Objective Analysis and Torry Steed of SMART Modular Technologies, who explain this new technology and explore how the CXL market is likely to develop in various market segments to predict how CXL will impact each of them.
